I will be going to college next fall and my parents are looking into a credit card for me so i can get rewards points to use towards my flights home (i live in new england, but will be moving to california for college.)
i dont have to worry about interest or anything bc they will be paying my bills (graduation gift.)

Do your math on those airline rewards.
I haven’t found one yet that gives me more than 1% back on my purchases.
I have always thought its a better deal to get a cash back rewards cards. Like 1% cash back.
No airline miles can beat that.
Plus airline miles are a nightmare to redeem.
Do your math. Make a smart decision.

You have the wrong idea. All the airline reward credit cards are a waste for students. You should not be buying stuff on a credit card unless you are more disciplined than 99.999% of students. Pay cash/use your debit card. Also, the redemption needed for airline miles is getting ridiculous and the blackout dates and low availability make them next to useless.
The Citi mtvU card is a great student rewards cards that earns ThankYou points which can be used toward tickets on any airline. It’s the *only* card that earns 5% rewards (5 points per dollar spent) at restaurants, book stores, movie theaters, and video rental stores; it also earns 1% rewards everywhere else.
There are some other good student rewards cards as well. You can use this rewards calculator to see which of them (including Citi mtvU) will pay you the most in rewards for your entered spending profile:
